I don't have a lot of experience with the 3GP container, but I wanted to have a stub page to point to what little I do have.

You can see the Samsung Gravity 2 page where I encoded video successfully for that device.

Most importantly, the specs I used:

I have spent a lot of years doing research on multimedia on Linux, and even do some developer work on Gentoo Linux for a while. I've picked up a *lot* of stuff in that time, and this wiki is a personal braindump of everything I can casually throw together.

	* Problem DVDs

My notes from 2008 complain about the aspect ratio for the PAL disc of Airborne:

For movies with the wrong aspect (PAL), that should be flat but show up in 4/3 try this:

mplayer airborne.vob -monitoraspect 1.00

That should straighten it out. :)

Also, sometimes mplayer dvd:// will play them correctly (I guess it was a libdvdread issue the whole time).

Every once in a while I try to understand aspect ratio better, and each time I get confused.

Here's some starters:

	* An NTSC DVD frame is 720×480 in storage size
	* Display aspect ratio is stored in media file
	* Pixel aspect ratio is what you'd use to force something to

I should again emphasize that these are really old notes, pre-2008, and some of these bugs in software may have been fixed since then.

I hit an interesting bug with a DVD, today. I was trying to get the
trailers from Bedknobs and Broomsticks. I could play them with Xine,
but lsdvd wasn't showing them anywhere. I finally fired up dvd::rip and
it found them, but only when I wouldn't use lsdvd to probe the device.

Similar to DVDs, which use CSS, Blu-rays use AACS for their DRM. There are two ways you can bypass it. Using libaacs and a KEYDB.cfg file, or using MakeMKV which bypasses it completely.

Note that for UHD discs (4K), I've never gotten FindVUK to work on them, you will have to use MakeMKV.

When using HandBrake, you most likely want to enable detelecining to restore content to it's “original” framerate.

As a personal matter, I only care about deinterlacing, and don't worry about the framerate.

Some great information as to why is found here on MPlayer's documentation wiki:

The best way to get the best quality from a rip is very simple -- try it with some settings and play it back in your client environment and see if you like it or not. :)

Trying to find settings to work across the board for everything is only going to cause a lot of problems if you don't start with QA.

	* Demuxing

On a DVD, because you're not opening a file, you would tell the demuxer what you're going to send it in the stream -- video size, pixel format, and maybe more. See av_dict_set() for setting attributes in an AVDictionary struct.

avformat_open_input() will scan the input until it finds out what it is. I think setting dict options would only apply though if you were passing rawvideo, and not something that was muxed already and had data about the stream.

I have two Sony Blu-ray players. The BDP-S390 and the BDP-S5100. The first one I use because it has RCA output for my older TV. They both have wifi on them, so they can stream media. The video player also uses DLNA. It also has playback for MP4s and MKVs, but there are slight differences between the two models what they can support. It's only after a lot of nitpicking that I narrowed down the best setting …

My two Sony DVD players. These are my favorite :D I prefer them over the newer Blu-ray players for DVD playback because they will remember playback position of up to six discs. It's awesome.

I got rid of my old ones long ago, though, and I just have old ones I bought used. Sadly, I threw away my original remotes as well. I still have them programmed into my own remote, but it's not the same.

	* Problem DVDs

For the record, this is a really cool indy movie. :)

Here's my notes regarding this one, which according to the file stat, was last updated at Nov 16th, 2008.

I had a tricky time getting the trailer off of The Spanish Prisoner.

Here's what happened:

lsdvd reports one track, the movie.

mplayer-svn dvdnav:// says there are trailers on there.

I used vobcopy -m to copy the entire disc. It copied a VIDEO .vob, 86mb
in size which looked like a trailer.

People have basically said, “if you want it to play *everywhere*, your best chance is Video CD.” It's true. I can get these to play in my two DVD players, and both of my Blu-ray players. Doesn't look bad, either. I like it as a good alternative and fail-proof backup of transferring VHS videos to something.

The best way I've found to do this is by using MythTV to record, since

I use VLC primarily to play back Blu-ray discs to see the titles and playlists. You will need Java installed to view them. I've had differing success based on which version of Java is installed both on Windows and Linux. For Linux, any version of openjdk should work. For Windows, anything above Java version 8 I've had trouble with. You may have completely different results of course.

The VTSM is a regular VOB that displays the menus. If the DVD title has a menu (I'm guessing here that it's optional), then the filename is the first VOB.

So for the first title, it would be VTS_01_0.VOB. You can generally confirm this by looking at the size of the first IFOS, since they are generally very small in size (compared to a VOB containing a feature video).

Raw video (YUV) in an MPEG2 container. I sometimes use this when I'm going to transfer from one source to another.

Take an existing video and convert to a 480p raw video

Zotac ZBOX-BI320

I love my tiny little Zotac box that runs Plex for me. :)

In the kernel, load *all* the HDMI audio codecs as modules. It'll break otherwise.

Also, the video card drivers (i915) must also be loaded as modules, or the box will segfault on booting.
